What’s the Difference Between Air Conditioning and Heat Pumps?

Are you wondering about the difference between an aircon and a heat pump? If so, you’ve come to the right place. It can be difficult to tell the difference but in the simplest of terms, an air-conditioner calls whilst a heat pump heats and cools. A heat pump Waikato is like an air conditioner that can run backwards by absorbing heat. Let’s look at it in more detail.

Heat pump and air conditioner difference

Air conditioning units are made up of three components: in the outside unit is housed the compressor and the condenser coil, in the inside unit there is the indoor evaporator coil. The air conditioner uses a refrigerant that transfers heat to the outside unit into the coil which causes a chemical reaction when the refrigerant is compressed by the compressor. The unit then pulls heat out which is cooled when sent back into the unit inside. All of this to say that the blower pulls warm air from your home, cools it, and then circulates it back.

Heat pumps basically just reverse this process to offer heat as well. It brings warm air from outside and pumps it into your home. If it’s really cold though, you might need to have another heat source that works in conjunction with it. Here at Hamilton Aircon, we offer quality heat pump installation in Hamilton, as well as air conditioning installation in Hamilton.

Air conditioning versus heat pump

So, why choose one over the other? You might be wondering why people choose heat pumps over air conditioners when you may need to use a secondary heat source too, and that’s valid. However, consider that in cooler weather you might be able to just use your heat pump, and it’s only in really cold weather that you may need to use another heat source. When it’s really cold, using the heat pump together with another heat source could save you money.
